About this deal

Students who take only a single semester of calculus, which includes most biology majors at some colleges in the United States, do not see the exponential function and natural logarithm. This is a serious problem, because these are among the most important functions for applications in biology. HELPFUL EXAMPLES: Every concept is supported by thoughtfully worked examples that encourage students to develop an analytic view of the subject. To provide further insight into mathematical concepts, many detailed examples display solutions graphically, analytically, and/or numerically. Margin notes expand on and clarify the steps of the solution. The Area and Distance Problems. The Definite Integral. Discovery Project: Area Functions. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Indefinite Integrals and the Net Change Theorem. Writing Project: Newton, Leibniz, and the Invention of Calculus. The Substitution Rule. Review. Problems Plus. So, if they put all the ODE material into a single chapter that would be wonderful. The truly missed opportunity at the end of Multivariable Calculus is that the student is equipped to study some of the lower level Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) that are out there. Such as just finding characteristic equations and such would be a huge boost to the students. PDE books notoriously don't write out step by step examples, but Stewart could have put them in at this location and doing a few basic problems. Every concept is supported by thoughtfully worked examples—many with step-by-step explanations—and carefully chosen exercises. The quality of this pedagogical system is what sets Stewart's texts above others.

New examples have been added (see Example 6.1.5, for instance), and the solutions to some of the existing examples have been amplified. Modeling with Differential Equations. Direction Fields and Euler’s Method. Separable Equations. Applied Project: How Fast Does a Tank Drain? Models for Population Growth. Linear Equations. Applied Project: Which Is Faster, Going Up or Coming Down? Predator-Prey Systems. Review. Problems Plus. Numbers, Inequalities, and Absolute Values. Coordinate Geometry and Lines. Graphs of Second-Degree Equations. Trigonometry. Sigma Notation. Proofs of Theorems. Answers to Odd-Numbered Exercises.QUALITY EXERCISES: With over 8000 exercises in all, each exercise set carefully progresses from skill-development problems to more challenging problems involving applications and proofs. Conceptual exercises encourage the development of communication skills by explicitly requesting descriptions, conjectures, and explanations. More challenging “Problems Plus” exercises reinforce concepts by requiring students to apply techniques from more than one chapter of the text, and by patiently showing them how to approach a challenging problem. Stewart, James (2012-01-06). Single Variable Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals. ISBN 978-1133112785. CLEAR EXPOSITION: Dan Clegg and Saleem Watson have remained true to James Stewart's writing style speaking clearly and directly to students, guiding them through key ideas, theorems and problem-solving steps, and encouraging them to think as they read and learn calculus.

Two new projects have been added: The project, Controlling Red Blood Cell Loss During Surgery, describes the ANH procedure, in which blood is extracted from the patient before an operation and is replaced by saline solution. This dilutes the patient's blood so that fewer red blood cells are lost during bleeding and the extracted blood is returned to the patient after surgery. The project, Planes and Birds: Minimizing Energy, asks how birds can minimize power and energy by flapping their wings versus gliding. In short, this says, we have integral of a function over a domain. This is equal to antiderivative on boundary of domain. This work needs to be declared, standard in High-school Mathematics. If you desire a career in Engineering, Mathematics, Scientists, Architecture. Inverse Functions. Instructors may cover either Sections 6.2–6.4 or Sections 6.2*–6.4*. STEM APPLICATIONS: Stewart/Clegg/Watson answers the question, "When will I use this?" by showing how Calculus is used as a problem-solving tool in fields such as physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, medicine, and the social sciences. Vector Fields. Line Integrals. The Fundamental Theorem for Line Integrals. Green’s Theorem. Curl and Divergence. Parametric Surfaces and Their Areas. Surface Integrals. Stokes’ Theorem. Discovery Project: The Intersection of Three Cylinders. Triple Integrals in Spherical Coordinates. Applied Project: Roller Derby. Change of Variables in Multiple Integrals. Review. Problems Plus. The traditional method has the advantage of being cleaner, and the proofs are simple enough that they can be presented to starting calculus students in a mathematically rigorous way. However, it has several distinct disadvantages: Stewart draws on physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, medicine, and social science to motivate students and demonstrate the power of calculus as a problem-solving tool in a wide variety of fields. The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He conducted research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Dr. Stewart most recently served as a professor of mathematics at McMaster University, and his research focused on harmonic analysis. Dr. Stewart authored a best-selling calculus textbook series, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS as well as a series of successful precalculus texts. If you want to do mathematics the right way, you need to put pen to paper, this is unavoidable. It is not enough to read these texts like a novel, as any mathematician will tell you. You, truly, can only learn it by doing it and I don't really care how much of a genius someone is, they are still human and will need to do this at some point. One of the complaints one of my colleagues had about the text was that the problem sets in Stewart were too easy, so that was one of the major justifications for using Thomas, despite the exposition being sub par in my opinion. I am happy to report that the 8th Edition seems to be rather different from the 2nd edition that I remember working in. The 8th Edition has definitely cranked up the difficulty level on the problem sets, in some ways this was detrimental to later sections of the text. (It's the one criticism I have of the text, but I will get into that later). This increased challenge factor to the problems has truly launched this book into the flagship Calculus book category for me. Stewart was gay and involved in LGBT activism. According to Joseph Clement, a documentary filmmaker who is working on a film about Stewart and Integral House, Stewart brought gay rights activist George Hislop to speak at McMaster in the early 1970s, when the LGBT liberation movement was in its infancy, and was involved in protests and demonstrations. In the “early transcendentals” method, the logarithmic and exponential functions are introduced shortly after the definition of the derivative. Exponentiation where the power is an arbitrary real number is defined by the formula Stewart's text offers an extensive collection of more than 8,000 quality exercises. Each exercise set is carefully graded, progressing from skill-development problems to more challenging problems involving applications and proofs.
