About this deal

Each game has access to 4 save states meaning you can have up to 12 save states on something like Super Mario World. The Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System has the original look and feel of the ‘90s home console, only smaller. Once again, you can apply visual filters to games, from a CRT flicker to pixel-perfect presentations taking advantage of the full 1080p high definition afforded by HDMI output. The whole thing comes in a period-style Nintendo-branded box, which is a neat touch, and the console unit is an almost exact replica of the original system as well as the classic controller, so anyone who owned a SNES back in the day will instantly feel right at home. It also comes with an HDMI cable to link up the system with your television as well as a USB power cable to make it easy to charge your device on the move (or at home).

If you press reset at any time, the system will remember the last 45 seconds of gameplay, letting you try that tricky bit where you died over and over again until you get it right. Games play EXACTLY like the original and there seems to be zero input lag between it and every HDTV I have hooked it up to.

Though the Japanese design is the same as the European version, the box is much more colourful and inviting. All of this fits into the palm of your hand – a strange experience for anyone who actually played a 1990s console, and a great way to introduce younger players to a golden era of gaming pleasure. They mention that it looks like the SNES from back in the day, it kept the original design, and is a very cool little machine.

Then there are five massive RPGs – EarthBound, Final Fantasy III (actually Final Fantasy VI, but with the original western title), Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – each providing dozens of hours of gaming, while the likes of Contra III: The Alien Wars, Mega Man X, and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts prove as addictively challenging as they did in the '90s. Of course, the most notable game included on the console is Star Fox 2, a game that until now has never actually been released. The only bad thing which everyone complained about with the NES Classic were the length of controllers.

You'll need to complete a portion of the original Star Fox to unlock it for play, but once you do so, you'll find it a fascinating look into a bygone era. The SNES Mini – or "Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System" to use its full, unwieldy title – doesn't cram in quite as many games as its predecessor, but makes up for it with some shining examples of gaming history and the sheer amount of play time owners are likely to get out of it.
